Pro tip: if your office Christmas party looks like this, RUN!
It’s December, and that means office parties just around the corner! It’s a fun occasion to relax and let loose with colleagues around some good food, music, and, of course, drinks. But office parties can also be social minefields. The combination of alcohol and accumulated fatigue from work can lead to awkward situations.
Here are some tips to get the most out of your office party and avoid regretting it the next day.
How to Dress
You want to look good when you go out, but these are still your colleagues! A wardrobe malfunction during a night out with friends can be laughed off in minutes, but the same can’t be said of colleagues. The solution is to find the middle ground, the “sweet spot” between formal, trendy and casual. Too sexy sends the wrong message, but so does too casual.
Here’s a great example.
Keeping it Cool
It’s great to wind down with colleagues, especially when you don’t often get a chance to do so. But it’s equally important to remember that they’re still your colleagues! It would be unwise to get as casual as you get with your close personal friends, especially in one-on-one conversations.
You should also remember to drink responsibly – there’s nothing worse than doing or saying something foolish, to a colleague, only to have to confront them the next day. Worse still would be doing so with a superior!
Have I mentioned you should make an effort to drink responsibly? It should be really obvious, but it still bears repeating. You don’t want to be remembered as the drunken slob!
Don’t Forget to Have Fun
It’s all about balance! There’s a way to have a GREAT time without making a fool of yourself or anyone else. Just relax, office parties can be lots of fun! Speak to people you never work with, enjoy the food and drinks, and you never know what new professional connections you could make!
