Montreal’s old flag featured four symbols.
The City of Montreal has unveiled its new official flag and coat of arms.
In an effort to recognize the historic presence of native people in Montreal, a white pine has been added to the four existing symbols on the flag. Centered in the middle of the red cross, the white pine symbolizes peace and harmony between peoples.
Most Montrealers are able to recognize the old flag, but far fewer know the significance of its symbols. The City of Montreal explains them on its website:
Since the creation of the original Montreal flag, native people had been excluded from its symbolism. The City hopes this change will contribute towards a durable reconciliation, and promises more actions will come.
