Fresh Spring Trends for your Hair!

Fresh Spring Trends for your Hair!
www.pinterest.ca

There is a lot of good news for your hair this Spring.

For those of you with dry hair after lots of color treatments, this is the time to enjoy the liberating moment that comes from chopping it all off. For those of you who want more natural looks, go for it, this season it’s about embracing your natural hair texture and color. If you adore French Girl looks, there are a ton of ways to embrace it, from accessories to the new bangs. If you want to be on trend without changing your hair, it’s all about using accessories to make major statements. Or, you can go a less obvious route and adjust your hair part. And lastly, for those of you who want to make a dramatic change, there are pastel colors to chose from and drastic cuts. This includes going much shorter, to shaving it all off, as many celebs have chosen to do.

Here are our Favorite Spring 2018 Hair Trends for cuts, colors and accessories.

Dark Roots Allowed

Over coffee the other day, a friend told me “I want to keep my hair pale blonde but have darker roots so I can die it myself at home in between salon appointments.” It’s like the hair gods were listening. Dark roots are hot right now. You can see it on Kim Kardashian, Margot Robbie and many of the big fashion players. Blondes are going with more golden shades with warmer tones for an old Hollywood look. Some are going silver, and some are sticking with platinum.

Natural Flow

It’s no surprise that magazines are telling us to think Cindy Crawford in jeans when it comes to natural flowing hair. Considering her daughter Kaia Gerber is THE model right now it makes perfect sense. The natural hair trend also means there is no need to straighten your hair because natural waves and curls are back. Think big power 80’s model hair in the wind or air-dried beach curls. This look is unstructured and relaxed. Who doesn’t love that?

French Girl

Brigitte Bardot inspired ribbons and scarfs are everywhere. Tie a simple black ribbon over a low or high ponytail for a minimal look, or a scarf. (You can also tie the scarf around your hand bag handle, your ankle or your wrist). Straw hats are also part of this trend, as are retro head scarfs to keep your hair under control for those driving-in-a-convertible hair emergency moments. Or this could also mean a haircut, which brings me to the next trend.

Bangs for your buck

Bangs, or as they are now called, the fringe is in. You can either go for shorter precisely cut bangs that need more maintenance, or for longer bangs that you can part slightly in the middle. This look is versatile so you can also part them on the side. Think Caroline de Maigret or Charlotte Gainsbourg. Also, for those with curls, think the original Dirty Dancing. Bangs always make a high pony tail look messier and really…sexier.

Middle Part

We all remember Farrah Fawcett’s wind-swept hair and specifically her middle part. I love Zosia Mamet’s platinum hair in The Boy Downstairs as an example of modern blunt cut with the middle part. Her platinum blonde hair and dark brows create a striking androgynous look. Jennifer Lawrence definitely pulls this look off.

Side Part

Military precision can be used for these side parts and add some crystals like at Dries von Noten. Longer hair can be parted on the side and paired with big bold colored earrings or held back with accessories.

#Pinning

Bobby pins, barrettes or clips can be used to hold back your side part. Donatella Versace put these in gold on the models. Simone Rocha used several all over the head decorated with a hot trend this season; pearls. Other designers used bobby pins to make crowns and artistic patterns. This look is THE way to dress up your hair this season. No need to wait for Halloween to let out your inner Margot Tenenbaum or Blair Waldorf. This is one of the School Girl trends popular this season along with ribbons and…

Scrunchies and the City

Oh yes. Sex and The City devotees will be shocked! This 80’s trend is hot with tons of examples on Pinterest including how to make your own without sewing. You can incorporate the floral or plaid trends with the materials you select. Worn on a low pony tail, this becomes a more adult look. To keep your look sophisticated, stick with smaller scrunchies without a print. In their defense, they are gentler on your hair than elastics.

Braids

Rapunzel braids, intricate braids and peekaboo braids are big. Try a fishtail braid on either side of your neck like they did at Jill Stuart. More complex braids are also referred to as School Girl Plaits.

Fenty Bongee Pony

Rihanna used bongee cords to make a statement in pony tails perfect for the gym. I love this look with huge hoop earrings for night.

Taking the Short Cut

We all remember Margot Robbie’s haircut at this year’s Oscars styled by Bryce Scarlett. I loved how modern it looked against her feminine gown. It felt fresh without taking itself too seriously. Since shoulders, sleeves and necklines have such a big presence this year, blunt short cuts help show them off. This is the new bob. Chin length and parted in the middle is a classy look. Many women are liberating themselves from longer hair and going for this fresh chop. This cut looks great with waves too. Adding bangs is also the thing to do. Some call this a bowl cut but done properly it looks gorgeous with the right eye make-up.

Pastels

The unicorn trend has been revamped. Rose quartz and lavender colored hair are all the rage. This trend has been big for a few years and it’s not going anywhere. Model Stella Lucia at Alexander Wang put this trend back on the map. We are also seeing serenity blue appear on the red carpet.

Flower Crowns

This is your pass to pile flowers high on your head, and not just the snapchat kind. Beautiful for brides or casual for festival season, everyone can find a reason for this accessory. Dolce & Gabbana and Lena Hoschek put stunning regal headpieces on the models.

40’s Pin-Up

Using bobby pins to style a 40’s-inspired roll at the front or side of your hair is a fun way to reimagine this look vintage look. I first saw this in a French magazine with checkered power suits, huge hoop earrings and a dark red lip. It’s gorgeous and feminine.

Darker Brunettes

As a brunette that favors light brown, I was surprised when I recently died my roots and they mistakenly went darker than usual. I actually loved the change and may keep it going. Brunettes in Hollywood are choosing darker espresso browns for Spring. Red heads are going with richer ginger tones.

Color-Melted Ombre

Jessica Biel and Selma Hayek rock this trend. It’s a more natural looking version of the Ombre trend from a few seasons back. It won’t damage your hair as much either. It’s about a dark rich chestnut that melts seamlessly into lighter shades for a multidimensional look.

High Buns

This is a retro look that worn with a pale lip stays modern. This is great for brides and the red carpet.

Wet Looks

Bella Hadid surprised everyone at Jason Wu on the runway. Just when you thought this look was over, they bring it right back. We also saw the wet look with a curl at Marni. From the pool to drinks anyone?

Messy Pixie Cuts

Kendall Jenner’s faux pixie cut at Tom Ford was striking.  Many actresses go for a pixie cut and some consider their short hair to be a lifestyle statement. This year’s pixie cut is messy and asymmetrical.

Turbans & Headbands

Models on the runway at Veronica Beard and Marc Jacobs wore the new 70’s turban. I have trouble getting behind the headband look because they always slip off my head, but they were on so many runways for Spring that I had to add them anyway.

Regardless of what you chose to do with your hair, I can’t help but feel we have liberating options. Going with your natural texture, choosing healthier options for your hair or finding ways to make your hair better match your lifestyle all sounds good to me. It makes sense that like in Spring Fashion, adding flowers to your hair is a go. We don’t just covet the YSL fringe boots, we want our hair to reflect that rock and roll vibe. Pastels aren’t just for your suits, they are for your hair. Try a wash out conditioner if you don’t want to commit to a full die job. I had to compliment a woman at my barre class for her pink hair. I was shocked when she told me it washes out. It looked amazing!

No matter what you chose, have fun with it! And I mean that sincerely, because we are all wondering if Spring will ever come to Montreal, so why not let your hair bring you relief from winter’s constrictions?
