Although it became a summer anthem, Collins Dictionary has officially named “Brat” the 2024 Word of the Year.

The term, popularized by singer Charli XCX as the title of her sixth studio album, is defined as “characterized by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude.”

The dictionary announced the news on Friday, noting that “brat summer” had emerged as one of the most talked-about phrases of 2024.

Other popular words of 2024 that received a special mention include:

  • Yapping: “Talking at length, especially about inconsequential matters.”
  • Era: “A period of history or a long period of time, particularly highlighting a distinct quality or feature.”
  • Delulu: “Utterly mistaken or unrealistic in one’s ideas or expectations.”
