Donatella Versace didn't predict Angelina Jolie's "viral" fashion moment at the 2012 Academy Awards.

The Eternals actress hit headlines and spurred several memes when she stepped out in a strapless black velvet Versace gown with a dramatic thigh-high slit to the prizegiving.

During a recent interview for The Wall Street Journal, Donatella described the iconic dress as a defining look for the Italian luxury house.

"The leg went viral, the image went everywhere," the creative director recounted. "Sometimes you don't know which dress is the best, but when you see someone wearing the dress it can become fantastic."

Donatella added, "When I do something, I do it big... I don't do simple."

Previously, Angelina revealed that she had originally selected a different gown for the night.

"There's a whole longer story behind that - I had a more complicated dress and I wore the more comfortable dress, which was that one, and I think I was just so comfortable that," she told Extra in 2019. "I think when you feel comfortable, when you feel yourself."
