Britney Spears has confessed that her and Justin Timberlake's matching double-denim outfits were "tacky".
In her new memoir, The Woman in Me, the pop star revealed the story behind the iconic 2001 American Music Awards outfits.
"In the South, moms love to round up the kids and say, 'Listen, we're going to go to church today, and we're all going to color-coordinate,'" Britney explained.
The singer attended the event wearing a strapless Kurt and Bart denim gown with a matching handbag, while the NSYNC star sported denim trousers, a denim jacket and matching cowboy hat.
"I still can't believe that Justin was going to wear denim and I said, 'We should match! Let's do denim-on-denim!'" Britney said of how she came up with the idea.
The 41-year-old then added that she "thought it was a joke", writing, "I didn't think my stylist was actually going to do it, and I never thought Justin was going to do it with me. But they both went all in."
Britney acknowledged that the looks were "tacky", however, she enjoys seeing the famed outfits being revived by fans.
"I get that it was tacky, but it was also pretty great in its way, and I am always happy to see it parodied as a Halloween costume," the star noted.
Justin and Britney, who dated from 1999 to 2002, attended a number of events together during their romance.
"Justin and I were always going to events together," the Circus hitmaker wrote. "We had so much fun doing the Teen Choice Awards, and we often color-coordinated our outfits. But with the matching denim, we blew it up."
