As the new school year begins, the City of Montreal has announced an expansion of its safety initiatives for school zones and parks, aimed at protecting young people.

This year, $14 million will be allocated to 32 high schools, elementary schools, daycares, and 5 parks as part of the Programme de sécurisation aux abords des écoles.

The safety measures will include widening sidewalks, adding more speed bumps, and enforcing speed limits more strictly, among other improvements.

The city estimates that over 11,000 students will benefit from these enhanced safety features.

The targeted schools and parks are located in the following 10 boroughs:

  • Ahuntsic-Cartierville
  • Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce
  • Le Sud-Ouest
  • Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve
  • Montréal-Nord
  • Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles
  • Saint-Laurent
  • Verdun
  • Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension
  • Ville-Marie.
