Céline Dion has paid an emotional tribute to "cherished mentor" Quincy Jones.

The legendary record producer and composer died at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday. He was 91.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Céline shared two photos of herself and Quincy and posted a heartfelt message in memory of the music icon.

"I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of my friend, the one and only musical genius, Quincy Jones," she began. "Quincy touched my world as both a cherished mentor and as also as someone I looked up to for his deep impact on virtually every form of American music."

Céline went on to describe working with Quincy as a "dream come true".

The Canadian superstar recorded the Ennio Morricone song I Knew I Loved You with the prolific producer in 2006.

"In our sessions, his musical intuition was nothing short of profound - he helped me capture 'a little piece of heaven'. Quincy always knew exactly what each song needed," the 56-year-old recalled.

Elsewhere in the tribute, Céline praised Quincy's contribution to promoting the arts.

The pair collaborated again in 2010 to record a remake of 1985 charity single We Are the World to raise funds following the Haiti earthquake.

"In addition to his kindness and countless achievements, I also admired him for his philanthropic work which benefited the arts, global famine and underprivileged youth. His reach truly extends to all corners of the globe!" she added. "Quincy once said, 'Music is the soul of the universe. It connects us all on a level that words alone cannot reach.' May his wisdom and joy remain with us always."

In response to Céline's emotional message, Nicole Scherzinger simply wrote, "Thank you so much for sharing this."

Quincy is survived by his seven children.
