Canadians are being sent to the polls on April 28 after current Prime Minister Mark Carney called for a snap election.
The election comes 45 days after Carney, leader of the Liberal Party, was sworn in as the country’s new prime minister following Justin Trudeau’s resignation.
The five main political parties are:
- Liberal Party led by Mark Carney
- Conservative Party led by Pierre Poilievre
- Bloc Québécois led by Yves-François Blanchet
- New Democratic Party led by Jagmeet Singh
- Green Party co-led by Elizabeth May and Jonathan Pedneault
The elections come as the country is currently facing a trade war with the U.S., as well as persistent pressure from President Donald Trump suggesting that Canada should become the 51st American state.
The campaign will last only five weeks, the minimum duration allowed.
Additionally, the federal leaders' debates have been scheduled in Montreal for April 16 (French) and April 17 (English).
