Ed Sheeran has provided a rare insight into his friendship with Taylor Swift.

A bond was sparked between the musicians in 2012 when Swift, 35, referenced one of Sheeran's songs while on stage.

They went on to collaborate on tracks including Everything Has Changed and The Joker and the Queen and have also been on tour together.

The pair don't see each other as often as fans may think, however, with Sheeran telling the Call Me Daddy podcast that they catch up around, "four times a year".

He explained, "I see her when I see her. Like, instead of catching up the whole time, we have a proper sit-down, six-hour catchups, and I think that's like a really nice way to do it."

Sheeran, 34, also revealed he found touching texts between him and Swift from years back as he has been going through old records amid a copyright lawsuit over his 2014 track Thinking Out Loud.

Opening up to podcast host Alex Cooper, the British star said, "It was really nostalgic going through.

"I lived in Nashville, and she lived in Nashville, and we used to fly to and from the gigs together and do all sorts of ... I don't know. I literally spent almost every single day with her for about six months, so I think that period of time (was my favourite)."

Sheeran and Swift could soon return to the studio as the American star is expected to re-record her 2017 album Reputation for a Taylor's Version update.

The Lego House singer featured on the track End Game on the record, meaning they could meet up in person to work on an updated version of the track.
