A Quebec bio-pharmaceutical company began clinical trials on Monday for a plant-derived COVID-19 vaccine.

Medi Cago is the first Canadian company to administer doses of a potential vaccine to volunteers.. there are 180 men and women between 18 and 55 who are taking part in the trials..

Unlike traditional vaccine development, the company does not use animal products or live viruses to create its vaccines.

The company says it uses QUOTE  “virus-like particles  or VLPs) that mimic the shape a virus, which allows the body to recognize them and then create an immune response in a non-infectious way.

The company expects to have efficiency and safety results in October.
