Mariah Carey has advised Chappell Roan to take pride in her talent as a method of dealing with fame.

Roan has shot to fame over the past year, but has struggled with attention from overzealous fans and cancelled performances to prioritise her health after finding the spotlight "overwhelming".

Asked by The Associated Press what advice she has to younger artists like Roan on dealing with fame, Carey spoke about her own self-esteem issues.

Speaking in general terms after a question that referenced Roan, she said: "Well, I have been through my share of dramas. And it's not fun because you grow up thinking, 'I want to be famous.'"

She went on to clarify, "I mean, really with me, it was always, 'I want to be a singer. I want to write songs.' But 'I want to be famous' was right there with it.

"I feel like it was probably because I didn't feel like I was good enough on my own because of the things I went through growing up. And that's not a good way to feel, you know?"

Offering her wisdom, the Touch My Body singer added: "My advice would be try your hardest to go into this industry with a love of your talent or what's really real for you.

"You know, if it's like, 'I want to be famous. I want to run around with those people, whoever they are, the famous people,' then it's probably not the best idea," the pop diva added.

Roan has mentioned that her struggles have mainly been associated with the shock of becoming famous so quickly, and how "superfans" now feel they have the right to "harass" her.

After returning to the road, the Good, Luck Babe musician completes her The Midwest Princess Tour in Austin this week.
