Chris Martin has admitted he's "sad" about being an empty nester.

The Coldplay star has two children with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, daughter Apple, 20 and son Moses, 18.

He's opened up about what it's like now they've both flown the nest and gone to college.

"'It's sad. That's the only word," he told Rolling Stone.

He continued, "But of course, it'd be weirder if they were still like, 'I can't leave.' Then you'd be more worried."

Apple is currently attending Vanderbilt University in Nashville, while Moses is studying at Brown in Rhode Island.

Chris, 47, did the interview before Apple made her social debut at Le Bal Des Débutantes at the Shangri-La in Paris in November. The singer admitted the event wasn't in his comfort zone, saying it was "so not something I ever thought I'd do, but because I'm so in love with her, I'm like, 'OK.'"

He went on to reveal how he likes to tease his son when they're in public together.

"My favourite new thing to embarrass my son is, if we're walking down the street and someone comes up to us and they say, 'I'm sorry to disturb you while you're with your son,' I say, 'That's not my son. That's my partner.'"

He added, "Yeah. I like them a lot."
