Miley Cyrus honoured Sinéad O'Connor at the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special by performing a cover of Nothing Compares 2 U.
Amid the three-hour TV special, held on Sunday night to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sketch show, the Flowers hitmaker teamed up with Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard for the tribute.
Aubrey Plaza introduced the performance, marking her first public appearance following the death of her husband Jeff Baena in early January.
Backed by The Roots, Miley and Brittany offered up a soulful rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U, which was originally written by Prince in 1984 and later recorded by Sinéad for her second studio album, 1990's I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got.
In 1992, the Irish singer-songwriter famously staged a protest against the Catholic Church by ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II and declaring "fight the real enemy" amid her rendition of Bob Marley's 1976 song War while serving as a musical guest on SNL.
Neither Miley nor Brittany referenced the protest during their gig.
Back in 2013, Sinéad criticised Miley for comparing the visuals in the video for Wrecking Ball to those in Nothing Compares 2 U. In an open letter, the musician-activist also claimed the popstar allowed herself to be "exploited" by music industry executives.
An online feud ensued, but in a concert special that aired on TV in 2023, Miley reflected on Sinéad's message.
"Our, you know, younger childhood triggers and traumas come up in weird and odd ways, and I think I had just been judged for so long for my own choices that I was just exhausted, and I was in this place where I finally was making my own choices and my own decisions, and to have that taken away from me deeply upset me," the 32-year-old said at the time. "God bless Sinead O'Connor, for real, in all seriousness."
O'Connor died at the age of 56 in July 2023.
Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon opened SNL50 with an emotional performance of Homeward Bound, while Lil Wayne, Bad Bunny and Paul McCartney were among the other musical guests.
